When I first opened my law firm, I was doing everything that I could to keep my expenses down (still do, really). We bid out our website project over the Internet and hired a company in India who agreed to create our site for $1000. I thought this was a great deal, until the very first communication with them, in which they asked me for the text so they could code it. I thought, if I HAD the text, what would I need them for???

When my Findlaw Rep approached me soon after that, and pitched me on a website that would cost more than $1000 each month, I thought that he was crazy. If he were not so nice, I would have thrown him out right away. As he explained it, if I got a couple of good clients from the website they would pay for it, and then the next client would essentially be free. Oddly, this made some sense, but honestly, I think that I just trusted him, and let him "sell" me. So, I took a leap of faith.

When we went live with the website, with the optimization that Findlaw built in, we quickly rose to the first page in Google and Yahoo, and have remained there ever since. We usually come up first or second in a wide variety of searches.

The first two clients came quickly, then the next twenty after that. I now get more than half of my new business from my website, including General Counsel of mid-sized businesses who, in the past, might have used Martindale Hubbell. Now they just do a Google search like everyone else, and so do lawyers in other states (and countries!) looking for Local Counsel or a local lawyer to be the Lead Lawyer on a California-based case. I have gotten many, many clients from my Findlaw website, and I am extremely satisfied.

One of the funniest moments was a couple months ago, at a California State Bar IP Section Meeting, when the Patent Office came out to California. At the Lunch, we went around and introduced ourselves. One of the patent attorneys at my table, a sole practitioner, heard my name and said: "You are THAT "Marc Hankin"! How do you keep coming up so high in every search??? I hate you!" I just broke out laughing, and then - thankfully - so did he!
